SURAH 52: AT-TUR (THE MOUNTAIN)

1 وَالطُّورِ By the Mount (of Revelation). I swear by the Mountain. By the Mount.
2 وَكِتَابٍ مَسْطُورٍ By a Decree inscribed And the Book written And a Scripture inscribed
3 فِي رَقٍّ مَنْشُورٍ In a Scroll unfolded. In an outstretched fine parchment. On fine parchment unrolled.
4 وَالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ By the much-frequented Fane. And the House (Kaaba) that is visited. And the House frequented.
5 وَالسَّقْفِ الْمَرْفُوعِ By the Canopy Raised High. And the elevated canopy And the roof exalted.
6 وَالْبَحْرِ الْمَسْجُورِ And by the Ocean filled with Swell;. And the swollen sea And the sea kept filled.
7 إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ لَوَاقِعٌ Verily, the Doom of thy Lord will indeed come to pass;. Most surely the punishment of your Lord will come to pass. Lo! the doom of thy Lord will surely come to pass.
8 مَا لَهُ مِنْ دَافِعٍ There is none can avert it;. There shall be none to avert it. There is none that can ward it off.
9 يَوْمَ تَمُورُ السَّمَاءُ مَوْرًا On the Day when the firmament will be in dreadful commotion. On the day when the heaven shall move from side to side On the day when the heaven will heave with (awful) heaving.
10 وَتَسِيرُ الْجِبَالُ سَيْرًا And the mountains will fly hither and thither. And the mountains shall pass away passing away (altogether). And the mountains move away with (awful) movement.
11 فَوَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ Then woe that Day to those that treat (Truth) as Falsehood;. So woe on that day to those who reject (the truth). Then woe that day unto the deniers
12 الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي خَوْضٍ يَلْعَبُونَ That play (and paddle) in shallow trifles. Those who sport entering into vain discourses. Who play in talk of grave matters.
13 يَوْمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَى نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا That Day shall they be thrust down to the Fire of Hell, irresistibly. The day on which they shall be driven away to the fire of hell with violence. The day when they are thrust with a (disdainful) thrust, into the fire of hell
14 هَذِهِ النَّارُ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ "This:, it will be said, "Is the Fire,- which ye were wont to deny! This is the fire which you used to give the lie to. (And it is said unto them): This is the Fire which ye were wont to deny.
15 أَفَسِحْرٌ هَذَا أَمْ أَنْتُمْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ "Is this then a fake, or is it ye that do not see? Is it magic then or do you not see? Is this magic, or do ye not see?
16 اصْلَوْهَا فَاصْبِرُوا أَوْ لَا تَصْبِرُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ "Burn ye therein: the same is it to you whether ye bear it with patience, or not: Ye but receive the recompense of your (own) deeds." Enter into it, then bear (it) patiently, or do not bear (it) patiently, it is the same to you; you shall be requited only (for) what you did. Endure the heat thereof, and whether ye are patient of it or impatient of it is all one for you. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do.
17 إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَعِيمٍ As to the Righteous, they will be in Gardens, and in Happiness. Surely those who guard (against evil) shall be in gardens and bliss Lo! those who kept their duty dwell in gardens and delight.
18 فَاكِهِينَ بِمَا ءَاتَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ وَوَقَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ Enjoying the (Bliss) which their Lord hath bestowed on them, and their Lord shall deliver them from the Penalty of the Fire. Rejoicing because of what their Lord gave them, and their Lord saved them from the punishment of the burning fire. Happy because of what their Lord hath given them, and (because) their Lord hath warded off from them the torment of hell-fire.
19 كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ (To them will be said:) "Eat and drink ye, with profit and health, because of your (good) deeds." Eat and drink pleasantly for what you did. (And it is said unto them): Eat and drink in health (as a reward) for what ye used to do.
20 مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَى سُرُرٍ مَصْفُوفَةٍ وَزَوَّجْنَاهُمْ بِحُورٍ عِينٍ They will recline (with ease) on Thrones (of dignity) arranged in ranks; and We shall join them to Companions, with beautiful big and lustrous eyes. Reclining on thrones set in lines, and We will unite them to large-eyed beautiful ones. Reclining on ranged couches. And we wed them unto fair ones with wide, lovely eyes.
21 وَالَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ And those who believe and whose families follow them in Faith,- to them shall We join their families: Nor shall We deprive them (of the fruit) of aught of their works: (Yet) is each individual in pledge for his deeds. And (as for) those who believe and their offspring follow them in faith, We will unite with them their offspring and We will not diminish to them aught of their work; every man is responsible for what he shall have wrought. And they who believe and whose seed follow them in faith, We cause their seed to join them (there), and We deprive them of nought of their (life's) work. Every man is a pledge for that which he hath earned.
22 وَأَمْدَدْنَاهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ وَلَحْمٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ And We shall bestow on them, of fruit and meat, anything they shall desire. And We will aid them with fruit and flesh such as they desire. And We provide them with fruit and meat such as they desire.
23 يَتَنَازَعُونَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا لَا لَغْوٌ فِيهَا وَلَا تَأْثِيمٌ They shall there exchange, one with another, a (loving) cup free of frivolity, free of all taint of ill. They shall pass therein from one to another a cup wherein there shall be nothing vain nor any sin. There they pass from hand to hand a cup wherein is neither vanity nor cause of sin.
24 وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ غِلْمَانٌ لَهُمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لُؤْلُؤٌ مَكْنُونٌ Round about them will serve, (devoted) to them, young male servants (handsome) as Pearls well-guarded. And round them shall go boys of theirs as if they were hidden pearls. And there go round, waiting on them menservants of their own, as they were hidden pearls.
25 وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ They will advance to each other, engaging in mutual enquiry. And some of them shall advance towards others questioning each other. And some of them draw near unto others, questioning.
26 قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ They will say: "Aforetime, we were not without fear for the sake of our people. Saying: Surely we feared before on account of our families. Saying: Lo! of old, when we were with our families, we were ever anxious.
27 فَمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَوَقَانَا عَذَابَ السَّمُومِ "But Allah has been good to us, and has delivered us from the Penalty of the Scorching Wind. But Allah has been gracious to us and He has saved us from the punishment of the hot wind. But Allah hath been gracious unto us and hath preserved us from the torment of the breath of Fire.
28 إِنَّا كُنَّا مِنْ قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ "Truly, we did call unto Him from of old: truly it is He, the Beneficent, the Merciful!" Surely we called upon Him before: Surely He is the Benign, the Merciful. Lo! we used to pray unto Him of old. Lo! He is the Benign, the Merciful.
29 فَذَكِّرْ فَمَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ Therefore proclaim thou the praises (of thy Lord): for by the Grace of thy Lord, thou art no (vulgar) soothsayer, nor art thou one possessed. Therefore continue to remind, for by the grace of your Lord, you are not a soothsayer, or a madman. Therefor warn (men, O Muhammad). By the grace of Allah thou art neither soothsayer nor madman.
30 أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ Or do they say:- "A Poet! we await for him some calamity (hatched) by Time!" Or do they say: A poet, we wait for him the evil accidents of time. Or say they: (he is) a poet, (one) for whom we may expect the accident of time?
31 قُلْ تَرَبَّصُوا فَإِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُتَرَبِّصِينَ Say thou: "Await ye!- I too will wait along with you!" Say: Wait, for surely I too with you am of those who wait. Say (unto them): Except (your fill)! Lo! I am with you among the expectant.
32 أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَامُهُمْ بِهَذَا أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ Is it that their faculties of understanding urge them to this, or are they but a people transgressing beyond bounds? Nay! do their understandings bid them this? Or are they an inordinate people? Do their minds command them to do this, or are they an outrageous folk?
33 أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُ بَلْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ Or do they say, "He fabricated the (Message)"? Nay, they have no faith! Or do they say: He has forged it. Nay! they do not believe. Or say they: He hath invented it? Nay, but they will not believe!
34 فَلْيَأْتُوا بِحَدِيثٍ مِثْلِهِ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ Let them then produce a recital like unto it,- If (it be) they speak the truth! Then let them bring an announcement like it if they are truthful. Then let them produce speech the like thereof, if they are truthful.
35 أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ Were they created of nothing, or were they themselves the creators? Or were they created without there being anything, or are they the creators? Or were they created out of naught? Or are they the creators?
36 أَمْ خَلَقُوا السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بَل لَا يُوقِنُونَ Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, they have no firm belief. Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay! they have no certainty. Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they are sure of nothing!
37 أَمْ عِنْدَهُمْ خَزَائِنُ رَبِّكَ أَمْ هُمُ الْمُسَيْطِرُونَ Or are the Treasures of thy Lord with them, or are they the managers (of affairs)? Or have they the treasures of your Lord with them? Or have they been set in absolute authority? Or do they own the treasures of thy Lord? Or have they been given charge (thereof)?
38 أَمْ لَهُمْ سُلَّمٌ يَسْتَمِعُونَ فِيهِ فَلْيَأْتِ مُسْتَمِعُهُمْ بِسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ Or have they a ladder, by which they can (climb up to heaven and) listen (to its secrets)? Then let (such a) listener of theirs produce a manifest proof. Or have they the means by which they listen? Then let their listener bring a clear authority. Or have they any stairway (unto heaven) by means of which they overhear (decrees). Then let their listener produce some warrant manifest!
39 أَمْ لَهُ الْبَنَاتُ وَلَكُمُ الْبَنُونَ Or has He only daughters and ye have sons? Or has He daughters while you have sons? Or hath He daughters whereas ye have sons?
40 أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مَغْرَمٍ مُثْقَلُونَ Or is it that thou dost ask for a reward, so that they are burdened with a load of debt?. Or do you ask them for a reward, so that they are overburdened by a debt? Or askest thou (Muhammad) a fee from them so that they are plunged in debt?
41 أَمْ عِنْدَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ Or that the Unseen in it their hands, and they write it down? Or have they the unseen so that they write (it) down? Or possess they the Unseen so that they can write (it) down?
42 أَمْ يُرِيدُونَ كَيْدًا فَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا هُمُ الْمَكِيدُونَ Or do they intend a plot (against thee)? But those who defy Allah are themselves involved in a Plot! Or do they desire a war? But those who disbelieve shall be the vanquished ones in war. Or seek they to ensnare (the messenger)? But those who disbelieve, they are the ensnared!
43 أَمْ لَهُمْ إِلَهٌ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ Or have they a god other than Allah? Exalted is Allah far above the things they associate with Him! Or have they a god other than Allah? Glory be to Allah from what they set up (with Him). Or have they any god beside Allah? Glorified be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him)!
44 وَإِنْ يَرَوْا كِسْفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ سَاقِطًا يَقُولُوا سَحَابٌ مَرْكُومٌ Were they to see a piece of the sky falling (on them), they would (only) say: "Clouds gathered in heaps!" And if they should see a portion of the heaven coming down, they would say: Piled up clouds. And if they were to see a fragment of the heaven falling, they would say: A heap of clouds.
45 فَذَرْهُمْ حَتَّى يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي فِيهِ يُصْعَقُونَ So leave them alone until they encounter that Day of theirs, wherein they shall (perforce) swoon (with terror). Leave them then till they meet that day of theirs wherein they shall be made to swoon (with terror). Then let them be (O Muhammad), till they meet their day, in which they will be thunder-stricken.
46 يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُمْ كَيْدُهُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَا هُمْ يُنْصَرُونَ The Day when their plotting will avail them nothing and no help shall be given them. The day on which their struggle shall not avail them aught, nor shall they be helped. A day in which their guile will naught avail them, nor will they be helped.
47 وَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا عَذَابًا دُونَ ذَلِكَ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment besides this: But most of them understand not. And surely those who are unjust shall have a punishment besides that (in the world), but most of them do not know. And verily, for those who do wrong, there is a punishment beyond that. But most of them know not.
48 وَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ Now await in patience the command of thy Lord: for verily thou art in Our eyes: and celebrate the praises of thy Lord the while thou standest forth. And wait patiently for the judgment of your Lord, for surely you are before Our eyes, and sing the praise of your Lord when you rise. So wait patiently (O Muhammad) for thy Lord's decree, for surely thou art in Our sight; and hymn the praise of thy Lord when thou uprisest.
49 وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَإِدْبَارَ النُّجُومِ And for part of the night also praise thou Him,- and at the retreat of the stars! And in the night, give Him glory too, and at the setting of the stars. And in the night-time also hymn His praise, and at the setting of the stars.
