عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ

Concerning what are they disputing?

Of what do they ask one another?

Whereof do they question one another?

عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ

Concerning the Great News.

About the great event.

(It is) of the awful tidings.

الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ

About which they cannot agree.

About which they differ?

Concerning which they are in disagreement.

كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

Verily, they shall soon (come to) know!

Nay! they shall soon come to know

Nay, but they will come to know!

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ

Verily, verily they shall soon (come to) know!

Nay! Nay! they shall soon know.

Nay, again, but they will come to know!

أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا

Have We not made the earth as a wide expanse.

Have We not made the earth an even expanse?

Have We not made the earth an expanse.

وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا

And the mountains as pegs?

And the mountains as projections (thereon)?

And the high hills bulwarks?

وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا

And (have We not) created you in pairs.

And We created you in pairs.

And We have created you in pairs.

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

And made your sleep for rest.

And We made your sleep to be rest (to you).

And have appointed your sleep for repose.

وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا

And made the night as a covering.

And We made the night to be a covering.

And have appointed the night as a cloak.

وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا

And made the day as a means of subsistence?

And We made the day for seeking livelihood.

And have appointed the day for livelihood.

وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا

And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments.

And We made above you seven strong ones.

And We have built above you seven strong (heavens).

وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا

And placed (therein) a Light of Splendour?

And We made a shining lamp.

And have appointed a dazzling lamp.

وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا

And do We not send down from the clouds water in abundance.

And We send down from the clouds water pouring forth abundantly.

And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant water.

لِنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا

That We may produce therewith corn and vegetables.

That We may bring forth thereby corn and herbs.

Thereby to produce grain and plant.

وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا

And gardens of luxurious growth?

And gardens dense and luxuriant.

And gardens of thick foliage.

إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا

Verily the Day of Sorting out is a thing appointed.

Surely the day of decision is (a day) appointed.

Lo! the Day of Decision is a fixed time.

يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا

The Day that the Trumpet shall be sounded, and ye shall come forth in crowds.

The day on which the trumpet shall be blown so you shall come forth in hosts.

A day when the trumpet is blown and ye come in multitudes.

وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا

And the heavens shall be opened as if there were doors.

And the heaven shall be opened so that it shall be all openings.

And the heaven is opened and becometh as gates.

وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا

And the mountains shall vanish, as if they were a mirage.

And the mountains shall be moved off so that they shall remain a mere semblance.

And the hills are set in motion and become as a mirage.

إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا

Truly Hell is as a place of ambush.

Surely hell lies in wait.

Lo! hell lurketh in ambush.

لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا

For the transgressors a place of destination.

A place of resort for the inordinate.

A home for the rebellious.

لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا

They will dwell therein for ages.

Living therein for ages.

They will abide therein for ages.

لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا

Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink.

They shall not taste therein cool nor drink

Therein taste they neither coolness nor (any) drink

إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا

Save a boiling fluid and a fluid, dark, murky, intensely cold.

But boiling and intensely cold water.

Save boiling water and a paralysing cold.

جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا

A fitting recompense (for them).

Requital corresponding.

Reward proportioned (to their evil deeds).

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا

For that they used not to fear any account (for their deeds).

Surely they feared not the account.

For lo! they looked not for a reckoning.

وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا

But they (impudently) treated Our Signs as false.

And called Our communications a lie, giving the lie (to the truth).

They called Our revelations false with strong denial.

وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا

And all things have We preserved on record.

And We have recorded everything in a book.

Everything have We recorded in a Book.

فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا

"So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment."

So taste! for We will not add to you aught but chastisement.

So taste (of that which ye have earned). No increase do We give you save of torment.

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا

Verily for the Righteous there will be a fulfilment of (the heart's) desires.

Surely for those who guard (against evil) is achievement.

Lo! for the duteous is achievement.

حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا

Gardens enclosed, and grapevines.

Gardens and vineyards.

Gardens enclosed and vineyards.

وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا

And voluptuous women of equal age.

وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا

And a cup full (to the brim).

And a pure cup.

And a full cup.

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا

No vanity shall they hear therein, nor Untruth.

They shall not hear therein any vain words nor lying.

There hear they never vain discourse, nor lying.

جَزَاءً مِنْ رَبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا

Recompense from thy Lord, a gift, (amply) sufficient.

A reward from your Lord, a gift according to a reckoning.

Requital from thy Lord - a gift in payment.

رَبِّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَنِ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا

(From) the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all between, (Allah) Most Gracious: None shall have power to argue with Him.

The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, the Beneficent Allah, they shall not be able to address Him.

Lord of the heavens and the earth, and (all) that is between them, the Beneficent; with Whom none can converse.

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا لَا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا

The Day that the Spirit and the angels will stand forth in ranks, none shall speak except any who is permitted by (Allah) Most Gracious, and He will say what is right.

The day on which the spirit and the angels shall stand in ranks; they shall not speak except he whom the Beneficent Allah permits and who speaks the right thing.

On the day when the angels and the Spirit stand arrayed, they speak not, saving him whom the Beneficent alloweth and who speaketh right.

ذَلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَى رَبِّهِ مَآبًا

That Day will be the sure Reality: Therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) return to his Lord!

That is the sure day, so whoever desires may take refuge with his Lord.

That is the True Day. So whoso will should seek recourse unto his Lord.

إِنَّا أَنْذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنْظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَالَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ تُرَابًا

Verily, We have warned you of a Penalty near, the Day when man will see (the deeds) which his hands have sent forth, and the Unbeliever will say, "Woe unto me! Would that I were (metre) dust!"

Surely We have warned you of a chastisement near at hand: the day when man shall see what his two hands have sent before, and the unbeliever shall say: O! would that I were dust!

Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"
