SURAH 79: AN-NAZI`AT (THOSE WHO PULL OUT)

1 وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence. I swear by the angels who violently pull out the souls of the wicked. By those who drag forth to destruction.
2 وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطًا By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed). And by those who gently draw out the souls of the blessed. By the meteors rushing.
3 وَالسَّابِحَاتِ سَبْحًا And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy). And by those who float in space. By the lone stars floating.
4 فَالسَّابِقَاتِ سَبْقًا Then press forward as in a race. Then those who are foremost going ahead. By the angels hastening.
5 فَالْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرًا Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord). Then those who regulate the affair. And those who govern the event.
6 يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion. The day on which the quaking one shall quake. On the day when the first trump resoundeth.
7 تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ Followed by oft-repeated (commotions). What must happen afterwards shall follow it. And the second followeth it.
8 قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ Hearts that Day will be in agitation. Hearts on that day shall palpitate. On that day hearts beat painfully
9 أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ Cast down will be (their owners') eyes. Their eyes cast down. While eyes are downcast
10 يَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state? They say: Shall we indeed be restored to (our) first state? (Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state
11 أَئِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَخِرَةً "What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?" What! when we are rotten bones? Even after we are crumbled bones?
12 قَالُوا تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!" They said: That then would be a return occasioning loss. They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding.
13 فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry. But it shall be only a single cry. Surely it will need but one shout.
14 فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِ When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment). When lo! they shall be wakeful. And lo! they will be awakened.
15 هَلْ أتَاكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَى Has the story of Moses reached thee? Has not there come to you the story of Musa? Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses?
16 إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَبُّهُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa. When his Lord called upon him in the holy valley, twice. How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa.
17 اذْهَبْ إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَى "Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds. Go to Firon, surely he has become inordinate. (Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled.
18 فَقُلْ هَلْ لَكَ إِلَى أَنْ تَزَكَّى "And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?. Then say: Have you (a desire) to purify yourself. And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)?
19 وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَى "'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'" And I will guide you to your Lord so that you should fear. Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him).
20 فَأَرَاهُ الْآيَةَ الْكُبْرَى Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign. So he showed him the mighty sign. And he showed him the tremendous token.
21 فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَى But (Pharaoh) rejected it and disobeyed (guidance). But he rejected (the truth) and disobeyed. But he denied and disobeyed.
22 ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَى Further, he turned his back, striving hard (against Allah). Then he went back hastily. Then turned he away in haste.
23 فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَى Then he collected (his men) and made a proclamation. Then he gathered (men) and called out. Then gathered he and summoned
24 فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَى Saying, "I am your Lord, Most High". Then he said: I am your lord, the most high. And proclaimed: "I (Pharaoh) am your Lord the Highest."
25 فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ نَكَالَ الْآخِرَةِ وَالْأُولَى But Allah did punish him, (and made an) example of him, - in the Hereafter, as in this life. So Allah seized him with the punishment of the hereafter and the former life. So Allah seized him (and made him) an example for the after (life) and for the former.
26 إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِمَنْ يَخْشَى Verily in this is an instructive warning for whosoever feareth (Allah). Most surely there is in this a lesson to him who fears. Lo! herein is indeed a lesson for him who feareth.
27 ءَأَنْتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ بَنَاهَا What! Are ye the more difficult to create or the heaven (above)? (Allah) hath constructed it. Are you the harder to create or the heaven? He made it. Are ye the harder to create, or is the heaven that He built?
28 رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا On high hath He raised its canopy, and He hath given it order and perfection. He raised high its height, then put it into a right good state. He raised the height thereof and ordered it.
29 وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا Its night doth He endow with darkness, and its splendour doth He bring out (with light). And He made dark its night and brought out its light. And He made dark the night thereof, and He brought forth the morn thereof.
30 وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا And the earth, moreover, hath He extended (to a wide expanse). And the earth, He expanded it after that. And after that He spread the earth.
31 أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا He draweth out therefrom its moisture and its pasture. He brought forth from it its water and its pasturage. And produced therefrom the water thereof and the pasture thereof.
32 وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا And the mountains hath He firmly fixed;. And the mountains, He made them firm. And He made fast the hills.
33 مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ For use and convenience to you and your cattle. A provision for you and for your cattle. A provision for you and for your cattle.
34 فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الطَّامَّةُ الْكُبْرَى Therefore, when there comes the great, overwhelming (Event). But when the great predominating calamity comes. But when the great disaster cometh.
35 يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا سَعَى The Day when man shall remember (all) that he strove for. The day on which man shall recollect what he strove after. The day when man will call to mind his (whole) endeavour.
36 وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَنْ يَرَى And Hell-Fire shall be placed in full view for (all) to see. And the hell shall be made manifest to him who sees And hell will stand forth visible to him who seeth.
37 فَأَمَّا مَنْ طَغَى Then, for such as had transgressed all bounds. Then as for him who is inordinate. Then, as for him who rebelled
38 وَءَاثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا And had preferred the life of this world. And prefers the life of this world. And chose the life of the world.
39 فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى The Abode will be Hell-Fire. Then surely the hell, that is the abode. Lo! hell will be his home.
40 وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى And for such as had entertained the fear of standing before their Lord's (tribunal) and had restrained (their) soul from lower desires. And as for him who fears to stand in the presence of his Lord and forbids the soul from low desires. But as for him who feared to stand before his Lord and restrained his soul from lust.
41 فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى Their abode will be the Garden. Then surely the garden-- that is the abode. Lo! the Garden will be his home.
42 يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا They ask thee about the Hour,-'When will be its appointed time? They ask you about the hour, when it will come. They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port?
43 فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا Wherein art thou (concerned) with the declaration thereof? About what! You are one to remind of it. Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof?
44 إِلَى رَبِّكَ مُنْتَهَاهَا With thy Lord in the Limit fixed therefor. To your Lord is the goal of it. Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof.
45 إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ مَنْ يَخْشَاهَا Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it. You are only a warner to him who would fear it. Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it.
46 كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا The Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn! On the day that they see it, it will be as though they had not tarried but the latter part of a day or the early part of it. On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof.
