SURAH 81: AT-TAKWIR (THE CESSATION)

1 إِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَتْ When the sun (with its spacious light) is folded up. When the sun is covered. When the sun is overthrown.
2 وَإِذَا النُّجُومُ انْكَدَرَتْ When the stars fall, losing their lustre. And when the stars darken. And when the stars fall.
3 وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سُيِّرَتْ When the mountains vanish (like a mirage). And when the mountains are made to pass away. And when the hills are moved.
4 وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ When the she-camels, ten months with young, are left untended. And when the camels are left untended. And when the camels big with young are abandoned.
5 وَإِذَا الْوُحُوشُ حُشِرَتْ When the wild beasts are herded together (in the human habitations). And when the wild animals are made to go forth. And when the wild beasts are herded together.
6 وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ When the oceans boil over with a swell. And when the seas are set on fire. And when the seas rise.
7 وَإِذَا النُّفُوسُ زُوِّجَتْ When the souls are sorted out, (being joined, like with like). And when souls are united. And when souls are reunited.
8 وَإِذَا الْمَوْءُودَةُ سُئِلَتْ When the female (infant), buried alive, is questioned. And when the female infant buried alive is asked And when the girl-child that was buried alive is asked
9 بِأَيِّ ذَنْبٍ قُتِلَتْ For what crime she was killed. For what sin she was killed. For what sin she was slain.
10 وَإِذَا الصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتْ When the scrolls are laid open. And when the books are spread. And when the pages are laid open.
11 وَإِذَا السَّمَاءُ كُشِطَتْ When the world on High is unveiled. And when the heaven has its covering removed. And when the sky is torn away.
12 وَإِذَا الْجَحِيمُ سُعِّرَتْ When the Blazing Fire is kindled to fierce heat. And when the hell is kindled up. And when hell is lighted.
13 وَإِذَا الْجَنَّةُ أُزْلِفَتْ And when the Garden is brought near;. And when the garden is brought nigh. And when the Garden is brought nigh.
14 عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَا أَحْضَرَتْ (Then) shall each soul know what it has put forward. Every soul shall (then) know what it has prepared. (Then) every soul will know what it hath made ready.
15 فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ So verily I call to witness the planets - that recede. But nay! I swear by the stars. Oh, but I call to witness the planets.
16 الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ Go straight, or hide. That run their course (and) hide themselves. The stars which rise and set.
17 وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا عَسْعَسَ And the Night as it dissipates. And the night when it departs. And the close of night.
18 وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا تَنَفَّسَ And the Dawn as it breathes away the darkness;. And the morning when it brightens. And the breath of morning
19 إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ Verily this is the word of a most honourable Messenger. Most surely it is the Word of an honored messenger. That this is in truth the word of an honoured messenger.
20 ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِنْدَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ Endued with Power, with rank before the Lord of the Throne. The processor of strength, having an honorable place with the Lord of the Dominion. Mighty, established in the presence of the Lord of the Throne.
21 مُطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ With authority there, (and) faithful to his trust. One (to be) obeyed, and faithful in trust. (One) to be obeyed, and trustworthy.
22 وَمَا صَاحِبُكُمْ بِمَجْنُونٍ And (O people!) your companion is not one possessed. And your companion is not gone mad. And your comrade is not mad.
23 وَلَقَدْ رَآهُ بِالْأُفُقِ الْمُبِينِ And without doubt he saw him in the clear horizon. And of a truth he saw himself on the clear horizon. Surely he beheld Him on the clear horizon.
24 وَمَا هُوَ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ بِضَنِينٍ Neither doth he withhold grudgingly a knowledge of the Unseen. Nor of the unseen is he a tenacious concealer. And he is not avid of the Unseen.
25 وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَيْطَانٍ رَجِيمٍ Nor is it the word of an evil spirit accursed. Nor is it the word of the cursed Shaitan. Nor is this the utterance of a devil worthy to be stoned.
26 فَأَيْنَ تَذْهَبُونَ When whither go ye? Whither then will you go? Whither then go ye?
27 إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِلْعَالَمِينَ Verily this is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds. It is naught but a reminder for the nations. This is naught else than a reminder unto creation.
28 لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَسْتَقِيمَ (With profit) to whoever among you wills to go straight. For him among you who pleases to go straight. Unto whomsoever of you willeth to walk straight.
29 وَمَا تَشَاءُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَالَمِينَ But ye shall not will except as Allah wills,- the Cherisher of the Worlds. And you do not please except that Allah please, the Lord of the worlds. And ye will not, unless (it be) that Allah willeth, the Lord of Creation.
