SURAH 88: AL-GHASHIYA (THE OVERWHELMING CALAMITY)

1 هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ Has the story reached thee of the overwhelming (Event)? Has not there come to you the news of the overwhelming calamity? Hath there come unto thee tidings of the Overwhelming?
2 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَاشِعَةٌ Some faces, that Day, will be humiliated. (Some) faces on that day shall be downcast. On that day (many) faces will be downcast.
3 عَامِلَةٌ نَاصِبَةٌ Labouring (hard), weary. Laboring, toiling. Toiling, weary.
4 تَصْلَى نَارًا حَامِيَةً The while they enter the Blazing Fire. Entering into burning fire. Scorched by burning fire.
5 تُسْقَى مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ The while they are given, to drink, of a boiling hot spring. Made to drink from a boiling spring. Drinking from a boiling spring.
6 لَيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ ضَرِيعٍ No food will there be for them but a bitter Dhari' They shall have no food but of thorns. No food for them save bitter thorn-fruit
7 لَا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِي مِنْ جُوعٍ Which will neither nourish nor satisfy hunger. Which will neither fatten nor avail against hunger. Which doth not nourish nor release from hunger.
8 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاعِمَةٌ (Other) faces that Day will be joyful. (Other) faces on that day shall be happy. In that day other faces will be calm.
9 لِسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ Pleased with their striving. Well-pleased because of their striving. Glad for their effort past.
10 فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ In a Garden on high. In a lofty garden. In a high Garden
11 لَا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَاغِيَةً Where they shall hear no (word) of vanity. Wherein you shall not hear vain talk. Where they hear no idle speech.
12 فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ Therein will be a bubbling spring. Therein is a fountain flowing. Wherein is a gushing spring.
13 فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَرْفُوعَةٌ Therein will be Thrones (of dignity), raised on high. Therein are thrones raised high. Wherein are couches raised
14 وَأَكْوَابٌ مَوْضُوعَةٌ Goblets placed (ready). And drinking-cups ready placed. And goblets set at hand
15 وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ And cushions set in rows. And cushions set in a row. And cushions ranged
16 وَزَرَابِيُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ And rich carpets (all) spread out. And carpets spread out. And silken carpets spread.
17 أَفَلَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَى الْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ Do they not look at the Camels, how they are made?. Will they not then consider the camels, how they are created? Will they not regard the camels, how they are created?
18 وَإِلَى السَّمَاءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ And at the Sky, how it is raised high?. And the heaven, how it is reared aloft. And the heaven, how it is raised?
19 وَإِلَى الْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ And at the Mountains, how they are fixed firm?. And the mountains, how they are firmly fixed. And the hills, how they are set up?
20 وَإِلَى الْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ And at the Earth, how it is spread out? And the earth, how it is made a vast expanse? And the earth, how it is spread?
21 فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُذَكِّرٌ Therefore do thou give admonition, for thou art one to admonish. Therefore do remind, for you are only a reminder. Remind them, for thou art but a remembrancer.
22 لَسْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمُسَيْطِرٍ Thou art not one to manage (men's) affairs. You are not a watcher over them. Thou art not at all a warder over them.
23 إِلَّا مَنْ تَوَلَّى وَكَفَرَ But if any turn away and reject Allah. But whoever turns back and disbelieves. But whoso is averse and disbelieveth.
24 فَيُعَذِّبُهُ اللَّهُ الْعَذَابَ الْأَكْبَرَ Allah will punish him with a mighty Punishment. Allah will chastise him with the greatest chastisement. Allah will punish him with direst punishment.
25 إِنَّ إِلَيْنَا إِيَابَهُمْ For to Us will be their return. Surely to Us is their turning back. Lo! unto Us is their return
26 ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُمْ Then it will be for Us to call them to account. Then surely upon Us is the taking of their account. And Ours their reckoning.
