| 1 | أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ | Have We not expanded thee thy breast?. | Have We not expanded for you your breast. | Have We not caused thy bosom to dilate. |
| 2 | وَوَضَعْنَا عَنْكَ وِزْرَكَ | And removed from thee thy burden | And taken off from you your burden. | And eased thee of the burden |
| 3 | الَّذِي أَنْقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ | The which did gall thy back?. | Which pressed heavily upon your back. | Which weighed down thy back. |
| 4 | وَرَفَعْنَا لَكَ ذِكْرَكَ | And raised high the esteem (in which) thou (art held)? | And exalted for you your esteem? | And exalted thy fame? |
| 5 | فَإِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا | So, verily, with every difficulty, there is relief. | Surely with difficulty is ease. | But lo! with hardship goeth ease. |
| 6 | إِنَّ مَعَ الْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا | Verily, with every difficulty there is relief. | With difficulty is surely ease. | Lo! with hardship goeth ease. |
| 7 | فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانْصَبْ | Therefore, when thou art free (from thine immediate task), still labour hard. | So when you are free, nominate. | So when thou art relieved, still toil |
| 8 | وَإِلَى رَبِّكَ فَارْغَبْ | And to thy Lord turn (all) thy attention. | And make your Lord your exclusive object. | And strive to please thy Lord. |
